I did a nice instructional flight with a commercial pilot candidate yesterday. The mission was to leave late in the day, complete the 2 hour day VFR dual cross country, stop at Harris Ranch (O38) and eat, theen complete the 2 hour night VFR dual cross country back to Oakland.
It all worked to perfection and the food at Harris Ranch is as good as ever. My only gripe is that the self-serve fuel pump at Harris will only dispense a maximum of $50 of 100LL at a time. To get more, you have to replace the fuel nozzle and swipe your card again.
Since it doesn't take 2 hours to fly from OAK to Harris Ranch, I gave the pilot a diversion to Woodlake (O42), just east of Visalia and nestled at the base of the Sierra Foothills. The airport was quiet, the weather was clear and warm, and the orchards and fields below us were just beautiful. We landed, taxied back, then headed to Harris.
We had lots of "fresh" country air after landing at Harris, since the winds were blowing out of the northwest (the direction of the stock yards).
Coming back to Oakland, we diverted to Rio Vista (O88) to ensure the night segment was over 2 hours. Did a few trips around the pattern at Rio Vista with C5's in the distance doing the same at Travis.
What a night!

Harris Ranch is fun, eat a great steak while you watch the cows graze. Along the same lines, it's fun to fly to Catalina for Buffalo Burgers while you watch the Buffalo roam.
